Directors Research Task

Corin Hardy

Corin Hardy began his career as a special FX monster-maker in his bike shed, aged 12; throughout his teenage years he gained film set experience in sculpting, props, wardrobe and art departments on a variety of film, TV and theatre productions.
He gained a Degree in practical special effects at Wimbledon school of art which lead to award winning stop-motion short 'Butterfly' in 2003, and from then on he began directing music videos starting with Keane's 'Somewhere only we know' & 'Bed shaped'. He has also made further videos for the band since, including 'The Night Sky' which Corin did in collaboration with school children. He went into a school as part of a project on raising awareness on war zones and asked a group of teenagers to help produce a music video for Keane and create animations that relate to the war zone theme. The animated stories in the video are inspired by the real experiences of children in War zones as told to them by War Child. This video showed some of the skills that can be picked up within a few days; Corin often does workshops introducing people to animation and music video making.

Corin was soon after signed to academy films in 2006 that include the wide variety of bands ranges from underground acts including Jon Spencer, Martin Grech and the Guillemots as well as commercial pop/rock of Mcfly, The Feeling, Olly Murs, Paolo Nutini and Biffy Clyro.
He also is noted for his imaginative and inventive work on the horrors Promo 'She IS the new thing' making it MVA award winning material, Aswell as the Prodigy's 'Warriors Dance'.

Corin’s video for the Prodigy’s ‘Warriors Dance’ saw him bring out his creative side by sculpting and cutting out cigarette boxes to make figures to animate. The band weren't available for the music video, so instead Corin had the free choice of the video.

Preliminary Task

This is our Final preliminary video:
For our preliminary task we didn't really have much time to plan or construct a music video, but just enough time to decide on a theme to go with the song that we were given. In my group none of us really knew the song that we had to do but by the way it was sung and the crisp sound the track had to it we could tell that it was an olden time song.
So the first decision was to make the video black and white to match the theme of the song.
- When filming a lot of ideas came up, and everything that we planned originally was adapted to.
- Whilst filming the video we thought that it would be a good idea to include lots of different angles like a normal music video would so that it would give us a higher mark.
- We decided to make the video have a comical sense to it as the song sounded cheerful and up-beat.

Shot count analysis

Katy Perry Wide Awake

This task showed me how many cuts are actually used in a music video, and how fast cuts and use of different angles can be very useful and effective for the video.
As well as showing me that the use of location is very important to portray a story to the audience, even if the video doesn't relate to the song all the time it is best to have a wider range to create a music video.
