Camera angle positions
Choosing the shots for the music video is one of the most important things, i have researched and seen that closeup shots are important to portray emotions to the audience, so this is on of the things that I will use most.
These are some examples of Extreme close up's and Close up's that i would like to use in my Music Video.
These are some examples of other shots that i would use in my music video, such as high angle, low angle, long shot, mid shot.

Mock up of Magazine Advert
For my Magazine advert I want it to be A4 so that it takes up all the page and will attract an audience more. The whole of the picture will be of the actor face with the title of the song put across her face, and the x taped over her mouth. Which will get the audience attention as to why there is a cross over her mouth. For the background i wanted it be smoke which would relate to the word 'toxic'.
Treatment
For my Music Video I want it to be performance based, mainly concentrating on the relation of the song, lyrics and the video to each other.
My music video doesn't really have a clear story but it will be shown that the actor in the video is crazy, love struck, broken down and hurt. It will reflect the story of desperation for love, and reflect the genre of Alternative Indie.
For the start of my video it will show my actor led half on the floor and half on her bed broken down and feeling alone. It will consist of lots of short cuts of the character, because I want the audience to see the facial experiences of the actor.
When the lyrics read 'slowly, its taking over me' there will be three shots taken of the actor shaking their head in a crazy state like the pain and hurt is taking over her. This shows that the style of the video isn't like a normal music video it has an eerie and ominous feel to it, which I feel will give the 'indie' feel to it as it is different to other videos.
Within the Video I am going to get my actor to fall on to the bed from the right side and also from the left side, I will then merge these together so that the actor looks like a double and falls both sides at the same time, one shot that iIwill also include is a high angle shot of the actor falling onto the bed, giving the audience a sense of her facial expressions. This shows the eeriness of the video making the audience eager to know what is going to happen next in the video. Making the video intriguing and fascinating.
One main shot that I would like to include in my Music Video is slow motion, and possibly stop motion. For the stop motion I will use it on shots such as when the actor is crying, a slow motion shot of a single tear falling down her face will she of the deep emotion within. As well as a slow motion fall on to the bed and possibly a slow motion ripping of things that she had supposedly got from her lover, showing the anger that she has towards him and how hurt that she is from this break up. I believe that audiences could relate to this because heart-break and people breaking down are something that happens every day in a normal life.

Target Audience Research
For this part of the research task I wanted to try and appeal to mass audience, but after researching into the artist i am using it shows that my video will more likely attract a smaller audience and age range.
The Genre that Yael Naim is labelled as is Indie Folk/New wave style. This compared to pop music or rock music is seen as targeting to a smaller audience that enjoys an individual style of music.
Although Indie Folk music targets a smaller audience, I believe that the stereotypical audience for Yael Naim is between 15-30 years old, for both a male and female audience.
For my target audience I want it to be similar, as the song that my music video is on is actually a cover or a hit pop song by Britney Spears but with Yael Naim's Indie twist. I am aiming for the ages between 14-25, for teenagers and young adults, both male and female. I think this audience is acceptable for the video that I plan to do because its going to be a love stricken story that could relate to this audience age.
Research into Genres
Music Styles
- Pop
- Alternative
- Rock
- Jazz
- Country
- Classical
- Punk
- Indie
Pop
- Sometimes known as 'Popular Music', the two terms are not interchangeable. Pop music usually refers to a specific musical genre where as popular music is a generic term for music of all ages that appeals to popular tastes. Originating from the early 1950's.
- Pop Music is often using elements of other styles such as rock, country and urban, it is often highly produced, using simple structures to the song such as verses, Chorus', Catchy hooks and bridges and often stick to simple repeated chord patterns
- Pop Music has influenced most other genres of popular music, there was a large use of guitars in the early years of pop music artists, whereas in modern times, Pop songs are expected to relate to Dance music in a way, so that they can be played in clubs and pubs stretching out to a bigger audience.
- MTV had a massive impact on the rise of pop music especially in the 1980s which promoted artists such as Madonna and Michael Jackson.
- Pop Music is mainly dominated in america, with the likes of artists such as Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, Beyonce and Many more.
Rock
- Rock Music Originated in the 1950s, particularly in America and the UK, rock music influenced a number of other genres such as Jazz, blues, folk and many other musical sources.
- Some of the American rock icons of the 1950s include singers such as Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins & Jerry Lee Lewis.
- As the years went by one major British band influenced rock&roll and the 'British invasion', The Beatles, who became one of the most influential English Rock Bands of all time.
- Since then the rock genre has changed majorly introducing sub-genres of rock, such as Punk Rock, Glam Rock, Heavy Metal, Classic rock, Folk Rock, Grunge and many others. Some of the artists that created such influence include Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Nirvana, The Ramones, The Beach Boys, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, and Iron Maiden.
- In Most rock songs the classic instruments used are electric guitar, a Bass Guitar coming from the Jazz era and a drum kit. These are the basis for a rock band/group which normally consists between 2-5 members.
Indie
- Independent music, is often shortened to indie music or 'indie' it is the type of music that is described as being independent from major commercial record label.
- In the UK the major record companies took over the main label power, although several British producers & artists launched independent labels, most of them soon failed comparing to the major labels. However in America independent labels & Distributors joined together to promote trade and parity with the industry.
- Indie Music has since branched out for other indie genres such as indie Folk, indie Rock, Indie pop.
- Some famous Indie artists include, Ben Howard, Mumford and sons, Jeff Buckley and Arcade Fire and many more.
The artist that is performing my song is in the genre of Indie Folk, so this genre relates the most to the song 'Toxic' as she has given her individual twist to it.
Industry Research

- Her third album was released in November 2010. The first single from this new record is "Go to the River".
- Tôt ou tard is a french record label, founded in 1996 as a break-off from Warner Music Group, which is the other record label that Yael Naim is signed too.
- Tôt ou tard signs mainly french artists as it is a french label, ones including Yael Naim.
- Tôt ou tard is french for 'sooner or later'
- Head of the label Vincent Frèrebeau, has signed thirty other bands and artists (in 2005) including other french artists such as Dick Annegarn and Constance Amiot.
- Warner Music France is a branch label off of Warner Music Group.
- Warner Music international/Entertainment has divisions worldwide including Europe, the branches are called Warner Music followed by the name of the country. Which includes Warner Music France.
Risk Assessment
When filming my Music Video I will have to focus on being careful as I am using some risky angles, and may have to climb over or onto objects to get a better shot.
- At one point during my shooting my actor will fall back, but to make it safe it will be on to a bed and I will have to stand on a stool or a ladder to get the high angle shot. I will make sure that someone else is there to accompany me when I film this, whether it is an adult or someone helping filming.
- In case of any accidents or injuries I will make sure that there is someone else with me when I'm filming the actor and that we have a phone with an emergency number at all times.
- The location I am using is inside, so there is less of a risk but there could be the risk of knocking things over when trying to get a shot- so I will make sure that everything breakable is put away or moved when I am filming some low angles.

Costume & Prop Planning
Costume Ideas
For my costume ideas I wanted to stick with a simple everyday look with a bit of a vintage twist, I stuck with a theme of patterned dresses and skirts because if I do decide to make my music video black and white or a sepia colour I think that the patterns will look intriguing to the audience, and they would see that I perfected each part of my music video.
These are some examples of how I would like my actor to have their make up, included in this is two looks that I will use in my video, one of them is more of a natural everyday look consisting of plain lips and some makeup on the eyes, which is what I will use for most of the video.
Where as for the second look is the dark smoky eyes, which I will use for when my actor will be crying so that the black tears will stream down her face making the tears stand out more. Also the bright red lips which I will use for various shots in my video.
Prop Possibilities
- Bed
- Chair
- Glass- alcohol
- Animals
- Books
- Torn picture
- Shoes
- Make-up
- Mirror
- Jewelry

Pitch
Today I pitched my idea for my music video to the class, some of the ideas that I pitched were included in the prezi powerpoint, but I also explained some other ideas that were not included, for example I explained some of my shot ideas in detail to try and get to class to understand what my video would look like.
At first I had a hard time describing my idea to the whole class, but I eventually described some of my location ideas, who would be included in my video and the mise en scene.
As my choice of track was a little bit different than others I had to go into more detail about the shots that I will be using, I described the fact that I will use mainly closeup shots in my video because I want the audience to see the emotion in my characters face.
Some of the feedback that I got from the class and Mr Turner was to do ore research on the story board and the location for the video, but overall the class liked my idea and was overall well received.

Magazine Advert Analysis- Three
Kings of Leon
Magazine Advert
This magazine advert is different to others because the image is interesting and abstract, it is a merged image of the four members of Kings of Leon and an eagle, it is easily noticeable and attracting to an audience, I chose to analyse this magazine advert because when i first saw it I immediately liked it and thought I would be able to create something like this for my Magazine advert.
Makeup&Hair
Although this isn't the most important part of the Magazine advert it is still notable that the hair that is seen is clean cut, neat and tidy. As well as the make-up isn't really visible because of the colour of the advert, but again the faces that are seen look airbrushed and tidy, which is appealing to some audiences to see a neat band, rather than a scruffy unappealing band.
Positioning
The positioning of the band members is vital because the focus of this image is mainly the picture in the center, this is important for an audience to recognize exactly who the band is by this image alone. The image takes up the whole of the age because it is seen as the most crucial part of a magazine advert, and because the image isn't one that is bright of bold the image itself holds the vital needs to attract audiences.
Eye Contact
Although the image is not bold or brightly coloured the center of the image shows two eyes staring directly into the audience looking at it, showing a connection with whoever is looking at the magazine advert. As well as the contact with the eagle eyes the contact with the human eyes is crucial too because it makes the picture stand out more compared to its background.
Shot Type
I assume that this is a mid shot of all four of the Kings of Leon members, then the pictures are shrunk down to create a merge of their faces with a closeup of an eagle merged over the top of their faces to give off an interesting outlook.
Font Type
The font used for the title of the album is one that stands out the most because of its peculiar writing style, the band name at the top shows importance by making the whole advert is made recognizable, the Bold white capital letters across the top of the page stand out and would easily be seen straight away. The text at the bottom of the page is also one that stands out because of the use of yellow colouring, which is bolder and brighter especially against the black background, as well as the words 'out now' that stand out in the red writing although it is a little bit smaller than the Band name and album title but is still noticeable straight away.
Layout
The layout of this magazine advert is simple because the main part of it is the picture because it is so intriguing and interesting to see, it is again a portrait advert so it would be on a whole page of a magazine and would stand out as soon as the page is flicked on to. Kings of Leon have made sure that they are noticed straight away, and that the alum is recognized because it is seen as the biggest part of the advert.
Magazine Advert Analysis- Two
Marina and the Diamonds
Magazine Advert
Makeup&Hair
I chose to analyse this Magazine advert because it relates to a possible idea that i would like for my own magazine advert, the advert features a huge image of Marina Diamandis the singer from Marina and the Diamonds. As her face is the main image and there is no costume scene her hair and make up are of most importance, her make up isn't too extreme but there is fine detail put into her eye makeup to make them pop out more. Her hair is down and rested around above her head and neck as she appears to be posing lying down her hair isn't styled.
Positioning
The positioning of Marina is vital because her head takes up the whole of the magazine advert, and is the first thing that the audience see. The whole Advert is an image anyway with the information about the album placed over the top, it is also a portrait advert so it would take up a whole page and stand out more.
Eye Contact&Body Language
This is an important part for this type of magazine advert because as the image is just of her head, eye contact should be the most important thing. Marina is looking directly at the camera as to try and draw in the audience and although you cant see her body she still manages to give off a seductive vibe towards the audience. This image is also used as her album cover for 'The Family Jewels' so people will recognise the image easily.
Shot Type
This shot is a Closeup of Marina, focusing just on her face and features, this image would be recognised because you are able to see the whole of her face and as it is used for the album cover aswell, audiences will immediatly be able to recognise who it is.
Font Type
The font that is noticible straight away of course is the main title, reading the artist's name and the name of the album, the title is in big bold letters written in special writing style that Marina and the Diamonds use in all of their album covers, this is so that people will recognise not only the artist but the writing as it is known for being related to that particular artist. One thing that i like most about this video is that the title and the name of the album is shaped across her face, and the writing pops out more because of the greyish patterned background making the audience see it straight away or from afar. Another thing that is advertised on this magazine advert is the single cover for her next single which is also on the album 'The Family Jewels' but is also available to download or buy as just a single. These are all in a smaller writing because they are not as important as the artist's name and the album title, but still manages to stand out, especially because there is also an image of the new single 'shapain' included in the advert just shrunken down so it doesnt take away all the attention from the album advert.
Layout
The layout for this magazine advert is different to others because the whole advert is just an image, but it includes all the things that a magazine advert would have. Although this one is a bit different because it includes another mini advert for a single release that is also included on the album, this is good because not only is she advertising her album she is advertising her other material that is available to her fans and any other audience. It is still attracting to the audience, because her face is the main image and the first thing that is seen on the page.

Magazine Advert Analysis- One
Florence and the machine
Magazine Advert
Costume
The image seen is one of Florence from Florence and the machine, the reason it is only her is because she is the main person of the band, I chose to analyse this magazine advert because I like the look of the costume that she is wearing, the album is called 'lungs' and so to represent that she is wearing a necklace that covers where her lungs should be, this is the first thing that is noticeable about the advert as well as Florence herself, she is wearing a dress that is of a frill look throughout the whole of the image we can see, by wearing this it brings more attention to the pair of fake lungs sticking out of her chest.
Makeup&Hair
Florence is sporting simplistic hair and make up because all the attention is drawn to the lungs on he chest, but although it maybe subtle and simple it is still perfectly coordinated with the rest of the image, Her hair is curled and tied up in a bun, as if her hair was down then the lungs wouldn't be as visible because it would be covered in her hair. Her make-up is very subtle so that it doesn't stand out too much compared to what is really meant to stand out, but there is still a sense of girlishness as she has bright cheeks and bright lips.
Positioning
The positioning of Florence is one of the most important things because her body is the first thing that is seen on the advert her body fills up the whole image section, this is important so that the first thing people will see is her face and body and instantly know who it is.
Shot Type
This is a mid shot of Florence, this image is easily recognisable as this is the same image that is used on her album 'Lungs' fans and many other audiences will be able to recognise who this is even though she isn't facing forwards or even before they see her name.
Font Type
The font used for the title of the band is in big bold letters so that it stands out for the audiences to see straight away, the font is in white which goes well with its black background because it pops out more. If an audience was to look at this advert on a page the first thing they would be drawn to and most interested in was the name as this appeals to the audience because the advert is about the star.
Another thing that is in big writing and stands out is the title of the album
Other writing on the page includes the names of some of the songs that are included in the album, and the bands website, these are all in smaller writing because these aren't main things, but are still easily readable.
Layout
This advert layout is quite simple because it includes all the necessary things that a magazine advert would have, it is a portrait advert which would normally take up a whole page, standing out more than the landscape adverts that are normally only half a page. The main image is of Florence which is the first thing people would see, it is a big image taking up most of the advert itself so it brings most of the attention to Florence.
Digipak Analysis- Three
Jack Johnson 4 Panel Digipak- In Between Dreams
This is Jack Johnson's Digipak for his album, In between dreams. The obvious theme throughout this album is the colours black and yellow, so that everything matches well and has a distinct look. This Digipak brings most of the attention to the front cover but still makes each panel attracting for the audience. The images throughout the Digipak show how chilled out the album itself is and gives off a mellow feel to it all, linking to the genre of music.
The Front Cover is a silhouette image, of a tree and supposedly Jack Johnson picking leaves off it, it is noticeable as being Jack Johnson because of the guitar that is included in the silhouette image. The image carries on to the back of the Digipak showing that just a simple image can captivate any audience. There is also a special edition sticker on the front of the Digipak suggesting that audiences can have a certain exclusivity.
This 4 Panel album is a better example of a detailed Digipak as Jack Johnson has made sure that each panel has something on it that would appeal to most audiences, the bright colours of course are the main part of attraction.
On the inside of the Digipak, one side is a simple edited photo of Jack Johnson with his guitar in front of his body. He uses this picture to emphasize the guitar because throughout his whole album the guitar is mainly the source of his music. On the other side is a plastic case containing the most important part of the Digipak is the CD with a print of a leaf silhouette on the card panel which is visible through the plastic case.
Finally the back of the Digipak is similar to most Digipak's except the image on the back seems to be of a trunk of a tree, but its actually a continuing image from the front cover which is a tree with branches and leaves. The back of the Digipak includes a list of all the songs that are on the album, including one live song that has been put in especially, hence the use of the special edition sticker. It also includes the necessary bar codes as well as small images of the record company and information about the copyright details.
Digipak Analysis- Two

Paolo Nutini 6 Panel Digipak- Sunny Side Up
Paolo Nutini's album is also a good example of a Digipak because like Coldplay he has individual album art, which is easily recognizable to an audience. The writing for this album is the same as the first album that he created so this is there to show the resemblance between the two albums, and also to show what style Paolo Nutini likes for his albums.
This is a Digipack that brings all the attention to the front cover, which is similar to what i would like for my Digipak because the front cover is the first thing an audience would see so all the attention and hard work should be put in it.
The Front cover shows an artist painted or sketched an image of what is meant to be Paolo Nutini eating breakfast which is a clever reference to when people can have there eggs 'Sunny Side Up' and that is also the name of his Album. The Front Cover also uses three bright colours to attract the audience, which on its own gives a uniqueness to this album cover.
As this is a 6 Panel Digipak, the inside panel would fold behind the front cover and the back cover would then go behind the inside panel, the inside panel is much simpler than the front cover as it doesn't have as much detail drawn to it, but this is seen as the most important part of the Digipak because inside is a hidden sleeve that keeps the CD in.
For the back of the Digipak it has kept to the same colour scheme and image that carries on across the whole of the Digipak, just like a stretched image. On the back of this is information about the album itself, which is again one of the most important things about a Digipak album. It includes the necessary bar code and copyright information about the record label in very small writing on the bottom of the Digipak as it is not as important for the audience to see, but has to be somewhere on the album.

Digipak Analysis- One
Coldplay 4 Panel Digipak- Viva la Vida
This Coldplay album is a excellent example of a Digipak as it shows how a simple involvement of card and art can create an amazing colorful experience, The front cover of the album is easily recognizable as they used a historical image of the french revolution, along with Graffiti style writing of the Album title 'Viva la Vida'.
On the inside of the Digipak there are 2 hidden sleeves to hold 2 CD's, one of the inside panel's shows four images of each of the band members in action, the use of black and white fits in with the colour scheme of the Digipak. This side of the inside panel also contains a booklet full of images and abstract paintings that the band have designed and used to influence the songs on the album. At the back of the booklet there is a image of the band all together this could give the audience a sense and a visual link in their head of who Coldplay is as a band.
On the other side of the inside panel reads the words 'Coldplay'-'Viva la Vida' Or 'Death and all his friends' in a bold coloured writing with a very plain black background, bringing more attention to the front cover which is really the main part of the Digipak, which I would also like for my digipak design,This is the side of the Digipak that holds the CD's.
The Final Side or the Back is similar to the inside right panel, consisting of the simple Gold writing and the plain black background, although the back has more writing on it as it includes the Track listing on this certain album, as well as the Bar code and the copyright details. Which wouldn't really attract or put off the audience as these are details that have to be put on the Digipak somewhere. On the back it also includes in very small print the record labels logo which is also located on the spine of the Digipak.
